Irene Sandler besides being a nurse was a humanitarian who started the Polish underground rescuing Jews from the Nazis. She was in charge of the Zegota or children’s section and helped save over 2,500 Jewish children smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Sendler was credited with saving the most Jews during the Holocaust.
