When J R R Tolkien started writing Lord of the Rings, he couldn’t possibly have thought the franchise would spawn into numerous Oscar-winning movies and one of the best children’s read ever. LOTR remains to this day one of the biggest fantasy dramas ever. Needless to say millennial have made the LOTR franchise their own by making LOTR-themed memes and jokes which have obviously gone viral.

Interestingly, one of pop culture’s leading debates is the comparison between Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones and fans have made multiple memes about how the two franchises are different and how they are not. Let’s have a look at some of the most important LOTR memes.

1Gollum likes it

Remember Gollum, the bald slimy creature obsessed with the ring? Countless memes have been created based on him. For instance this one, which you can use to talk about your favourite song cover.

Gollum remains a mass favourite with the fandom especially since he was one of the creepiest characters in the LOTR series, at least the first one to make a legit impact on fans, Andy Serkis did a tremendous job playing the creature and it obviously helped that he was a voice artiste.

2Fredo and flower

Just some Fredo humour, with his face on a flower. Somebody made this meme bringing together Fredo and photosynthesis. Fredosynthesis indeed.

In spite of being the protagonist Fredo has been mocked and ridiculed for some of his actions and most of the Fredo memes are in fact about how naive he was when the franchise began.

3LOTR for the woke

Even LOTR characters don’t like sexism and you can never assume anyone’s gender as you never know what or who is behind the armour and helmet.

Interestingly, LOTR was one of the first fantasy movies where women were seen in pivotal roles, and it paved the way for the women of Potterdom and GoT-verse.

Someone from the Game of Thrones universe also made it into the LOTR meme-world. Sean bean might not have survived GoT bit he definitely made it through the LOTR memes with enough relevance.

Sean Bean remains a nerd’s favourite as he is seen in most of the big young adult franchises from Game of Thrones to National Treasure. The running joke is that he ends up dead in whichever film he is in, which makes him perfect meme material.
