Being focused is a very important quality that is needed to excel in all areas of life. As much as one likes to believe that he has it all within control, there are times when the mind just slips away on a different kind of adventure, running through the various phases of life, stopping at some important events, cogitating and resuming the journey till it is caged again. Now, when the mind if off on its joy trip, you cannot stop what you are doing and need to put in all your efforts to try and concentrate on what you are doing. You are getting ready for work and happen to look out your window and spot beautiful birds chirping away. You begin to wonder about how nice it would be to go on a long drive right now given the beautiful weather. The image of a waterfall clouds your mind and you imagine bathing under it. You find some couples talking romantically and your mind goes to your girlfriend who is not on talking terms with you. You then think of ways of getting her to talk to you again. The waterfall, scenery is now a thing of the past as you are now busy making plans to get her back. In all this, time has gone by and suddenly you snap out of it to find yourself rushing out of the main door with a half-eaten sandwich dangling dangerously from your already full mouth that can hold no more food. Yes, you are late for work.

So, you get into your car and want to make it to work before the boss is hopping mad at you. The gears move automatically as if conditioned and you are on your way driving in a frenzy. But wait, you just missed a turn and realize this much later. How on earth could this happen? You take the same route every single day. You knew you had to take that turn just before you reached, then how did you end up missing it? Blame it on the wandering mind. It can take off anytime from anywhere. One needs to be careful as this can lead to accidents as well.

You are sitting in the bus and your stop is just a few turns away. Suddenly you spot a banner of your favourite movie. In a jiffy, you are transported to dreamland where you are busy playing the role of the hero in those movies. You get so engrossed in getting the dialogues and expressions right that you forget where you are and land up at some other stop. Your stop has gone long back. The wonders of the wandering mind can be funny.

You have been up the whole day and it’s 2 am now, but you find that you can’t sleep. Your brain, won’t shut up. You are thinking about what to wear for the party next weekend, whether the dog has been fed, would the neighbor have mowed his lawn today, why did the teacher punish your enemy and what not? And after all this you are obviously going to think about how little time you have, to sleep before waking up to another day’s challenges.

Sometimes while speaking with friends, you might get stuck, pause and ask them “where was I’’ or ‘’ what was I saying?’’ Suddenly you might not remember where you had paused and may end up repeating the whole sequence again and again. Your wandering mind makes sure you are busy elsewhere.

When your mind has been wandering crazily off late, you can’t do much with your expressions either. There could be times when you catch yourself staring at people. Now, you were busy on another trip with your mind taking you places and you find you’ve been staring at that lovely brunette right across the room for like a whole ten minutes! When the spell breaks and you notice her staring back, it can get quite awkward for you to even begin to explain what went on at that time. The mind can act up sometimes beyond your expectations.
You are in a meeting and are straining to listen to what the others are speaking. After a while you give up and ask if they could repeat that they had just said. This can happen a couple times more before people get it that you are out of focus. When the mind wanders you cannot fathom what the other person is saying, you can’t even hear sounds sometimes.

When the speed of your thoughts is faster than your mouth and you find yourself unable to form words, it is the doing of your wandering mind. You struggle to keep up with your thoughts and may miss some words in between while speaking. Many times, your mouth gets stuck unable to move.

You’ve put the steak for roasting and suddenly begin to think about the nasty fight you and a close friend had in your childhood. You begin to lay each fact in your mind and argue your case as if it were taking place in the court. Suddenly you smell something burning and that breaks the spell. Congratulations, your dinner has just got ruined, thanks to your wandering mind.

You turn on the bathwater and go to fetch clean towels from the storeroom. The bucket is overflowing with hot water and you have not returned to turn off the tap. You are standing in the storeroom holding the velvety towel, lost in thoughts about your last holiday. You imagine the snow, the cottage, the fun and you are deeply engrossed. You return to find cold water running instead of hot water.

You are sitting in class and listening to a lecture when you find yourself looking outside the door, waiting for the bell the ring. There’s a football match you need to catch on TV. The bus that can take you home before the match begins, leaves in 15 minutes. You just have to watch that match. You begin to worry about the class not ending on time. You might miss the bus. But what if you are able to get on that bus? Caught in between these thoughts, you end up taking no notes and go back home to slog away after the match.

As you begin to pour the tea into the cup, you begin to think about the new pair of shoes you saw at the mall last week. You admire the make, the colour and can’t wait to buy it. It would look awesome on you. As you begin to plan on saving money, you don’t take notice of the fully empty plate of extra snacks and the empty teapot. It’s all resting on your tummy. Your wandering mind could not tell how many cookies you just ate and how many cups of tea you drank?
