Cancer cases are increasing day by day and it is a real cause of worry for people living in the United States. Now, a new research has found that almost half of the cancer cases in the United States are caused by poor lifestyle. If we look at the common causes, then smoking, drinking and excess body weight remain the top cancer-causing factors.
The newly published research “A Cancer Journal for Clinicians” focussed on cancer cases in the United States which are caused by modifiable or changeable factors such as vices, body weight, and physical inactivity. The researchers were successful in estimating the number of cancer deaths which were caused by preventable exposures. It included secondhand smoke exposure, smoking, excessive body weight, high consumption of red meat and processed meat, low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber, and dietary calcium; ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure; physical inactivity, and alcohol intake.
The research used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to come to the conclusion that an estimated 42 percent of cancer cases and 45.1 percent of cancer deaths are caused by modifiable or changeable factors.

Cigarette smoking was the most prominent cause of cancer and cancer deaths. Almost 19 percent of cancer cases and 28.8 percent of cancer deaths were caused by smoking cigarettes. Excessive body weight was the second most prominent cause of cancer cases and deaths. 7.8 percent of cancer cases and 6.5 percent of cancer deaths were caused by excessive body weight.
Alcohol is also one of the prominent reasons for cancer cases and deaths. It is third most prominent causes of cancer. 5.6 percent of cancer cases and 4 percent of cancer deaths are caused by alcohol intake.

Physical inactivity was cause for 2.9 percent of all types of cancers. The combination of excess body weight, alcohol intake, poor diet, and physical inactivity was cause for 13.9 percent of cancer cases in men, but it also caused for the highest proportion of cancer cases in women (22.4%), followed by tobacco smoking.

Among the types of cancer, lung cancer was at the top with 184,970 cases and 132,960 deaths. Colorectal cancer is at second position with 76,910 cases and 28,290 deaths. As per the research data, 1,596,486 new cases of cancer and 591,686 deaths were seen in the United States in 2014 (latest year with available incidence data).
The proportions of all cancer cases and deaths attributable to smoking, red and processed meat consumption, HCV infection, UV radiation, and HIV infection were higher in men compared with women, reflecting historically higher prevalence of these risk factors in men. In contrast, the proportions were higher in women for excess body weight, alcohol intake, physical inactivity, and HPV infection, largely driven by the high burden of breast, endometrial, and cervical cancers attributable to these risk factors.

Cancer is the second most common causes of deaths after cardiac disease in the United States. One out of four deaths in the United States is happening due to Cancer. Breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung or bronchus cancer topped the chart for most new cancer cases. On the other hand, lung cancer tops the chart in cancer deaths. Breast and prostate cancer comes next.

The study finds that a huge number of cancer cases in the United States are caused by preventable factors. Researchers suggested that people should focus on preventable factors to check the rise in a number of cancer cases as well as bring down the number of cases and deaths in the United States.
"Increasing access to preventive health care and awareness about preventive measures should be part of any comprehensive strategy for broad and equitable implementation of interventions to accelerate progress against cancer," researchers said in their study.
