Children are never taken into account during trying times of family problems. Children are those family members who by default are expected to stay silent without voicing their thoughts and opinions as to how a family crisis may be affecting them. But you may be more than surprised at what may be going on in their little head.

This police officer got a cruel shock when he responded to a distress call from Cameron Simmons. This 13 year old wanted to run away from home.

1 Officer Gaetano Acerra gets a distress call from a 13 year old

Officer Gaetano Acerra from the Sumter police department in South Carolina got a distress call from 13 year old Cameron Simons. The officer was quick to respond driving down to Cameron’s home. When he met Cameron he wasn’t prepared for what transpired next. It almost broke his heart.

Acerra learnt that Cameron was in depression and wanted to run away. He gave an excuse that his mother had yelled at him and scolded him for touching his elder brother’s video games. But Acerra sensed there was more to it than just the yelling.

2 When the police officer walked into the house he got a shock

When Acerra asked to be taken inside, Cameron did so showing the officer his room. That was when Acerra was shocked and touched at the same time. There on the floor was Cameron’s clothes lying in a dirty trash bag. Acerra couldn’t even see a bed for the child to sleep on. It was then that he learnt of the family’s problems. This was the reason why this 13 year old wanted to run away from home.

Cameron’s mother was facing a crisis beyond her own abilities. She was compelled to move from Texas to South Carolina to care for a relative who had fallen seriously ill. Acerra was deeply moved and decided to go beyond his own limitations of duty. He acted as a compassionate Samaritan rather than a police officer.
