Burning incense at home is more of a traditional habit than anything else in many homes. There are several people who like burning incense sticks to sweeten the air, while many do not. However apart from burning the occasional incense stick; sage smudging can actually be beneficial to a home in more ways than one.
Smudging a home with sage or burning sage is an age old practice with its origins rooted deep within ancient traditions and centuries old spiritual beliefs. Today people still smoke their homes with sage in the belief that it will purify the home and rid it of all evil elements.
1 Studies find burning sage beneficial to a home
Burning sage and allowing the smoke to drift throughout the house fills it with positive energy simultaneously removing any negatives ones. Although the practice is a widespread belief, many are still skeptical about its benefits. Let’s read what science has to say.
A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology titled Medicinal Smoke through thorough research observed that may herbal and non herbal remedies throughout a section of homes burned various substances to acquire certain benefits. The study involved research form 50 countries which determined that smoke can also be a purifier.

2 Sage smudging is better than chemical substitutes for air purification
Another follow up paper was published in the same journal which explained how medicinal herbs when burned within a home helped remove 94% of airborne bacteria which kept a space clean for at least two days. What was even more amazing is the fact that after a month, the same space showed hardly many signs of pathogens that had been removed the first day of smudging sage.
Such a factor was beneficial for households where air is not as clean as before. The presence of antibacterial resistant bacteria makes a home vulnerable to infection and disease. Scientists observed that similar advertised chemicals did not work as well as sage smudging in a home. It was the best alternative to purifying and cleansing a home. Besides smudging, sage is also a medicinal plant and could be used for a variety of health benefits.
