Cancer cases are increasing day by day and it is a real cause of worry for people living in the United States. Now, a new research has found that almost half of the cancer cases in the United States are caused by poor lifestyle. If we look at the common causes, then smoking, drinking and excess body weight remain the top cancer-causing factors.
1 Cancer Caused By Modifiable or Changeable Factors

The newly published research “A Cancer Journal for Clinicians” focussed on cancer cases in the United States which are caused by modifiable or changeable factors such as vices, body weight, and physical inactivity. The researchers were successful in estimating the number of cancer deaths which were caused by preventable exposures. It included secondhand smoke exposure, smoking, excessive body weight, high consumption of red meat and processed meat, low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber, and dietary calcium; ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure; physical inactivity, and alcohol intake.
The research used data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to come to the conclusion that an estimated 42 percent of cancer cases and 45.1 percent of cancer deaths are caused by modifiable or changeable factors.

2 Cigarette Smoking Most Prominent Cause of Cancer Cases And Cancer Deaths

Cigarette smoking was the most prominent cause of cancer and cancer deaths. Almost 19 percent of cancer cases and 28.8 percent of cancer deaths were caused by smoking cigarettes. Excessive body weight was the second most prominent cause of cancer cases and deaths. 7.8 percent of cancer cases and 6.5 percent of cancer deaths were caused by excessive body weight.
Alcohol is also one of the prominent reasons for cancer cases and deaths. It is third most prominent causes of cancer. 5.6 percent of cancer cases and 4 percent of cancer deaths are caused by alcohol intake.
