Meet the Twins Born A Year Apart After Mom Goes Into Premature Labor

By Andrew Alpin, 4 January 2018

Sometimes life creates an unexpected twist in where quite a number of people in the world undergo the weirdest experiences. Blame it on evolution, physiology or hormonal imbalances, but there’s no stopping the bizarre now and then which is exactly what happened to Maria Ontiveros a farm laborer from Earlimart California who gave birth to a set of twins. But! These weren’t just ordinary twins because they were born a year apart. It is even more extraordinary than the case of the Irish twins Amy and Katie who were born 87 days apart. These twins were born a year apart simply because of the weird timing.

1Born a day, month and a year apart

Maria went into premature labor on Dec 31st, New Year’s Eve at 7 pm. Her first son Joaquin was born at 11.58 pm. But! As coincidence would have it, his twin sister was born, yes you may have guessed it just some minutes later at 12.16 am, so now that makes her birth year 2018.  It was fantastic timing that has even won the couple $3000 worth of baby supplies.

2Twins can be fun especially for the twins themselves

Being twins can be fun. If you have seen movies like harry potter, the twins Fred and George looked identical and were played by identical twins Brit actors Oliver and James Phelps. The only disadvantage which may be a relief to Parents is that you get just one birthday celebration in the family. So it’s a shared thing like cake and the festivities but it isn’t a bad thing really if you look at it. Being twins can be loads of fun too.

3One born in 2017, the other in 2018

The twins were born just twenty minutes apart but the calendar will note it as a year apart. While Joaquin was born weighing 5 Lbs 9 Oz at 11.58 pm on Dec 31st, 2017, his sister Aitana was born weighing 4 lbs 10.8oz at 12.16 am on January 1st, 2018. Well strictly speaking Aitana can easily demand a separate birthday for herself after all she was born in the following year.

4Born on either side of midnight

Both babies were born on two sides of midnight at the Delano regional medical center in California. The twins were actually born premature and were not due until January 27th, 2018. But it seemed fate had something else in store for them and their proud parents, Joaquin and Maria Ontiveros.  Though 20 minutes apart, it’s also a gap of a day, month and a year. That will give them something to boast about when older.

Although they share the same genes, they will in reality not be sharing the same birthday being born a year apart.

5A huge surprise for Parents who were given gifts by the local community

This has ended up being a huge surprise for the parents. Both Maria and her husband Joaquin who is also a farm worker. The couple has three more daughters together and has been given $3000 worth of baby supplies which local community groups donated to the hospital when they heard about the remarkable incident.

6Both babies are healthy and ready to go home

Both babies were healthy and doing fine. The doctors also said they would be ready to go to their home in Earlimart which happens to be a small locality situated between Santa Barbara and Fresno in California.

7A similar incident took place in 2012

In 2012 a similar incident took place with twins born a year apart when Katia was born on Dec 31st at 11.40 pm while her sister Bianca was born on January 1st at 12.07 am. The event occurred at Manchester’s St Mary’s hospital when the two girls were born to couple Macarena Urgate and Sebastian Leon. When Bianca arrived, a nurse exclaimed “its seven minutes past midnight. Happy New Year!”

8An even more incredible story is that of the twins Amy and Katie Elliot

If you thought this was fantastic, then even more incredible is the story of Amy and Katie, a set of Irish twins who were born 87 days apart and have made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. While Amy Elliott was born four months premature on 1st June 2012, her sister Katie was born an incredible 87 days after.

9Two little miracles

Maria Jones Elliot calls her daughters two little miracles. Amy was born weighing just 1lbs 3 oz but soon after she was born, Maria’s contractions stopped. Doctors then decided it would be risky to deliver Katie by other means and felt she would be safer inside the womb. She was born 87 days later on August 27 and weighed a healthy 5 lbs 10 Oz.

10Doctors were surprised how they survived

Doctors commented that their survival was the ‘medical equivalent of a lottery win' and said they 'had never seen anything like it in their careers'. The remarkable incident will now be entered into the Guinness Book of World records as the 'longest interval between the birth of twins'.

11Her prayers were answered

Maria Elliot 34 who belongs to Glenmore Co Kilkenny felt her little girls were miracles because 'As I held Amy for the first time I stroked my bump and prayed to God for a miracle.” She says she prayed to God to keep her girls safe and well and it seems her prayers were answered although it seems God decided to create his own little twist to the tale.

12She believed in hope

These weren’t twins born a year apart, they were a whole 87 days apart and it was a traumatic ordeal for Maria who described how Amy fought for her life in an incubator while Katie struggled inside her womb. 'Usually, you experience nothing but joy at the birth of a new baby, but it was so achingly bittersweet as both of their lives hung in the balance.” She and her husband Chris described it as the hardest 3 months of their lives but they also believed that where there’s life, there’s hope!!
