The Strange Mystery of Santiago Flight 513 That ‘Disappeared’ In 1954 only to Land Again in 1989 with Skeletons on Board

By Andrew Alpin, 23 March 2022

For decades, the ‘supernatural’ believers have been puzzled by the supposed incident surrounding Santiago Flight 513 between 1954 and 1989, and no one knows what to think about it. The flight that took off in 1954 mysteriously vanished, off the radar, never to be seen again, until 1989. Fifteen years later, in 1989, the very same flight reappeared and even landed with all its crew. However, none of them was alive. They were all reduced to skeletons.

For those who are unfamiliar with the case of the unexplained disappearance of Santiago flight 513, here’s is a brief synopsis.

The passenger flight was on a set course from West Germany to Brazil

Santiago Airlines Flight 513 departed Aachen, West Germany, on 4th September 1954, and was due to arrive in Porto Alegre, Brazil, 18 hours later. It took flight as usual, and things seemed to be going according to schedule that was until it reached the Atlantic Ocean. Once above the Atlantic Ocean, the flight just disappeared without sending out as much as a distress call, signaling that it would crash soon.

But the plane never reached its destination

The plane simply vanished in mid-flight while flying over the Atlantic. Multiple search teams were deployed to locate the missing aircraft and rescue the passengers and crew members. Years passed following the plane’s disappearance, and the attempts to find the plane’s wreckage or the passengers’ bodies were unsuccessful.

The airlines finally shut down, and rescue operations were called off

After two years, Santiago Airlines closed down and stopped all operations in 1956, just two years after the claimed disappearance. The search was also called off after failing to locate even a single indication of a plane crash. None of the passengers or flight staff was ever rescued since they were nowhere to be found.

An unauthorized plane suddenly appeared above Porto Alegre airport, which was Santiago flight 513’ destination

The Porto Alegre airport in Brazil saw an unauthorized plane circling the airbase 35 years later, on 12th October 1989. When the air traffic controllers tried to contact the pilot, they received no reply. Finally, the plane reached within a few feet of the runway and landed safely. Even after the plane had touched down, the engines were still operating and appeared well-kept. Once the unidentified flight landed, everyone couldn’t believe it was the same Santiago Flight 513 that went missing decades ago. But what people saw next was even more shocking.

The airport authorities approached the flight cautiously and saw something really scary

A shudder ran down everyone’s spine when they saw the plane’s door open on the tarmac from the outside, and it was like a sight straight out of a horror movie. There were 92 skeletons on board that were remarkably well-preserved. Eighty-eight of the skeletons were identified as passengers, and four were of the crew members on board. These skeletons were found “safely” belted into their seats. Upon opening the cockpit doors, Captain Miguel Victor Cury, the plane’s skeleton pilot, was also found still seated at the controls with his hands on the wheel.

Do you believe what you’re reading?

As unbelievable as it sounds, there have been many reports of flight disappearances in the past. Needless to say, most were allegedly proven false. In most cases, articles and tabloids were published with news that ultimately could not be verified. Whether the story about Santiago flight 513 is true or not is still an unsolved case whose legitimacy has been questioned over the years.

The origins of the report describing Santiago Flight 513’s disappearance

According to a report in the “Weekly World News Tabloid 14th November 1989 Edition,” Irwin Fisher, a newspaper reporter for The New York Times, confirmed the hazy aspects of the missing Santiago Airlines Flight 513. Whether or not these reports are accurate or just a fantastic hoax, it’s hard to tell.

As a general rule, there are three main reasons why the narrative is usually thought to be untrue

Tabloids have a bad reputation, which is the first reason. The tabloid Weekly World News was notorious for frequently printing “fake articles” on its pages. Another Pan Am flight, Flight 914, was missing for 37 years before reappearing and landing unharmed four years prior to Flight 513’s story’s release.

The mystery of Flight 513 is similar to a 1961 episode titled- ‘The Odyssey of Flight 33’

A 1961 Twilight Zone episode titled ‘The Odyssey of Flight 33,’ in which a plane “somehow, someway” travels back in time to 1939, is uncannily similar to the enigmatic mystery of Santiago Flight 513. For all you know, the case of Flight 513 could just be a false copy of this story.

Finally, there is no proof regarding Santiago Flight 513’s alleged disappearance

No reliable sources could potentially verify the 1954 news about Santiago Flight 513’s disappearance. It is unclear whether there are any documented records stating that the flight had vanished into thin air. The only material about the flight’s mystery is what was published in the tabloid piece of 1989.
