Terrified Couple’s Camera Films Man-Eating Grizzly Bear as It Mauls Them Alive

By Andrew Alpin, 4 February 2023

A man who thought he could talk to bears and his girlfriend were killed by one while their camera was left recording the entire incident. The man who would try to befriend wild grizzlies had been on many camping trips out in the wild. However, this particular trip was his last. Not only did he lose his life, but his girlfriend lost her life, too, in the terrifying ordeal. Even scarier was the fact that the couple’s last moments were caught on camera without their knowledge. The entire scene was recorded, and you can hear their spin-chilling screams and cries while the bear kills the man first and then the woman. Its footage was used to make “Grizzly Man,” a film that won several awards.

10 Tim named all of the bears

Timothy Treadwell grew up on Long Island, New York, and always wanted to be an actor. He auditioned for Cheers, but Woody Harrelson got the part instead, making Tim disillusioned with his life. He became an alcoholic and abused drugs like heroin. However, he eventually got sober and stayed that way. He found his purpose in life- to befriend Alaska’s wild bears!

Timothy Treadwell thought he was friends with the bears and would fly to Alaska every summer for 13 years and camp with wild grizzlies for a few months. The 46-year-old former heroin addict talked to the bears, played with them, and even touched them. He gave them names and thought of them as his friends. Even though Timothy’s friends and family told him it was dangerous, he insisted he was one with the bears and that they were just misunderstood.

9 His last trip from which he never returned

But on a stormy October evening, just hours before he was to be picked up by seaplane to go home for the winter, he was killed in front of his girlfriend, 37-year-old Amie Huguenard, who was killed soon after, by the same bear. The bear didn’t just kill them; he also made sure to turn them into a multi-course, gory buffet. What a strange thing that a man who spent his whole life trying to protect bears was killed by one.

8 Their pickup arrived at a gruesome scene

Willy Fulton knew what had happened as soon as he landed at Katmai National Park to pick up the two people, just 24 hours after he had last talked to Timothy. Instead of finding the couple waiting on the shore, they found an eerie silence and the “meanest-looking bear” sitting on a pile of Tim’s and his girlfriend’s remains. Its snout was covered in blood as it feasted on what was left of Timothy’s broken ribcage. The dead body of Amie was spread out near the tent.

7 The couple’s body parts were found scattered all over the place

Tim and Aime’s tents were torn and broken, and their evening snack was open but untouched. The shoes were neatly arranged by the door. A 3-foot-high mound of grass, mud, sticks, and bones was outside the tent. Ranger Joe Ellis saw fingers and an arm sticking out of the horrible pile. Nearby, they found a small piece of Tim’s spine and what was left of his head after it had been eaten. His wristwatch was still on his right arm when it was found.

6 The couple’s camera recorded the whole incident

Timothy set up camp in the most dangerous part of the area he called the maze. It was a place right in the middle where bears would walk. He didn’t know it, but he was setting himself up to die. He seemed determined to meet as many bears as possible. Bear experts say that Timothy set up his camp near a lake where bears would have to come as close as possible to it. Timothy was asking for trouble, but he didn’t care.

Tim’s video camera recorded the terrifying scene of what had happened. Tim wrote down everything he did with bears, and the attack was no different.

5 The video begins with screaming as the bear attacks Tim

Timothy and Amie were easy prey for bears because they had nothing to protect themselves from the dangerous animals. On the night of October 25, the couple got the attention of the big male grizzly weighing at least one thousand pounds. Instead of finding a way out, the rude and foolish Timothy left Amie in the tent and crept up to the scary animal he named- Machine like a wildlife reality show host. But Machine was hungry and not in the mood for some friendly chit-chat.

As the large predator began attacking Tim, the camera was on, and it caught the horrific thing that happened. The camera lens hadn’t been taken off, so those who viewed the recording had to listen to six minutes of spine-chilling screams. It starts with Amie, who is scared, asking Tim if the bear is still out there, to which he replies by screaming- “Get out here! I’m getting killed out here!”

4 The bear leaves for a moment

As Amie runs out into the storm and tells her boyfriend to “play dead,” the tent zipper can be heard moving. She screams and yells at the bear, and it lets Tim out of its grip for a moment. But as soon as she goes to get help, the bear comes back and clamps its jaws around his head again and pulls him back into the bushes.

3 The bear ate Tim, and then his girlfriend Amie was killed

Tim screams at Amy to “hit the bear,” and she can be heard telling him to “fight back” before she uses a frying pan to hit the bear. Tim’s screams turn into moans, and then Amy freaks out and lets out a series of horrifying screams. The bear stays creepily quiet the whole time. Even his growls could not be heard, and the recording ended there.

2 The bear was eventually shot

After the tragic incident, Machine, the bear, was tracked and shot. When the bear was killed, four trash bags full of human remains were found in its stomach. The 1,000-pound, 28-year-old male had trouble eating that season because of old age and broken teeth.

1 An award-winning documentary on this incident was produced

Willy says that Tim had tried to make friends with the bear before, but it “never happened.” Werner Herzog’s award-winning documentary The “Grizzly Man” was based on Tim’s life and this incident that happened in October 2003. It showed how Amie was scared of the bears and thought her boyfriend was “hellbent on destruction.”

She told Tim that this trip would be her last because she had a new job in California waiting for her. About the tape, Willy said, “Never listen to this,” and it is thought that he put it in a locked box with one of his friends.
