20 Insane Rules the Royal Children Have To Follow

By Christopher Paul, 25 June 2018

Many of us have wondered what it would be like to be born in the Royal Family. What an amazing life Prince George and Princess Charlotte must be having. They’re kids so obviously all the teaching about how to behave and carry yourself would come later, right? No, even though they are children they are being taught how to be a member of the Royal Family.

The moment any member, be it an adult or a child is out in public and in the eyes of the media and the world, they represent the Royal Family. They are taught how to behave, how to talk, how to interact, how to carry themselves from a young age and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Here are the insane rules the children of the Royal Family have to follow:

1No Monopoly

You must have heard about the fun and slightly addictive board game “Monopoly”, it is a fun and entertaining way to spend time with the whole family, that’s if you are not royal. This rule is not just for the children but for all the members of the Royal Family. But why you may ask. Because it’s too emotional and even a prim and proper family like the royal one can succumb to the high emotions.

2No Slouching

Posture is very important; you must have heard this somewhere in middle school in PE class. For the young royal children, this is drilled into their head until it becomes permanent for them. You will only get a glimpse of the royal children slouching. Not only that but they are also taught how to sit properly.

3No Eating After the Queen Is Done

At the dinner table, once the Queen has finished her meal everyone present there is expected to stop eating as well. This is done as a sign of respect to the Queen. Naturally being kids they are allowed to eat till their meals are done but they are taught from now to finish before the Queen. It has been noted in large events the Queen sets her purse on the table signalling that everyone should finish in 5 minutes.

4No Handling Money

Yes, the members of the Royal Family aren’t allowed to handle money. This is for safety reasons mostly as they could be robbed or harmed. The members have staff who will run errands and hold their money for them. Another reason is hygiene, it is a precaution to not let the family members touch hands or objects that are unsanitary.

5Accepting All Gifts

This would be an easy one to teach as which child does not like gifts? But this actually applies to every member of the Royal Family. When greeted with a gift, it is a tradition for them to accept it graciously and say ‘Thank you’ with a smile.

6No Carbs in the Castle

Family meals at the Royal Palace do not include potatoes, pasta, rice or any other foods of that nature. That is because the Queen feels like they are unhealthy to eat on a regular basis and are saved for special events. There is also no garlic present in the palace as the Queen does not like the flavour.

7No Casual Outfits

The children of the Royal Family are taught to dress to impress. As they are young now they don’t dress themselves but are taught to keep their clothes on and not to stain them. The boys of the family are usually in tailored shorts and the girls in typical dresses. Jeans are reserved for vacations.

8No Shellfish

The Royal Family is kept under a keen watch to make sure they don’t fall ill as their busy schedule will get ruined. For the sake of this, some food items are kept away from them and are forbidden. Shellfish is known to be one of the more common food allergies and for some people, these allergies can get severe.

9No Pre-Packaged Food

Staying on the topic of health, none of the Royal Family members especially the children are allowed to eat pre-packaged foods. A bigger question would be why they would even be fed pre-packaged food in the first place. The palace has a staff of chefs ready on call to prepare anything they are asked to.

10No Presents On Christmas Day

Every child around the world waits for Christmas morning to come so that they can open the gifts and play with their new toys. But, what about the royal kids? They’re already playing with theirs. Yes, the children in the Royal Family get to open their Christmas gifts on Christmas Eve at around teatime. This practice has German roots where the children are signalled to come to the Christmas tree via a bell and are allowed to open their gifts.

11No Electronic Toys

By electronic toys we mean devices and by devices, we mean tablets, iPads etc. This rule was made by Prince William and Kate Middleton as they believe these are not for children and are “Toys for adults”. You will see across the globe children under 16 years using tablets and iPads for gaming or entertaining with is something the Royal Family is against.

12Having the Perfect Windsor Wave

The royal wave is taught to the children from the time they can move their tiny hands. You will not see any fumbling, any erratic waves from Princess Charlotte as she was taught this since she was a tiny tot. The children are taught how to behave in public and it shows. Both children are always seen on their best behaviour whenever they are out.

13Learning Multiple Languages

Naturally being a part of the Royal Family you’d need to know different languages and naturally, you’d be taught that later before you’re 16? Nope, the children are taught different languages from a young age. They are taught this so that when with their parent in another country they can still interact with the people there.

14Know What to Say

This goes without saying that the children are taught what is acceptable to say and what isn’t from a young age. They are taught to be polite, use proper diction and be courteous. Not only that but they are also taught that some words can’t be used and are not appropriate. Words like “loo” is used instead of “toilet”, “scent” instead of “perfume” etc.

15Perform Royal Duties

Many things can be taught at this age but not many can be done. As of now with the children being very young their only royal duty is having tea with the Queen every Thursday afternoon. The children will be taught about the responsibilities they will have later in life. For now, they are allowed to be kids and have a normal childhood.

Now seeing how they are just kids and will make mistakes, here’s a bonus list of 5 rules the royal children have broken.

16Showing Temper In Public

Just like any child, the royal children don’t have that much control over their emotions. If you’ve been around kids, you know exactly what we’re talking about. It’s not their fault, they are toddlers, they haven’t figured out how to express themselves properly or in an appropriate manner. These children are exceptional when it comes to behaving in public but have their occasional outburst of emotions.

17Wearing Casual Outfits

We mentioned this point in our above list but this wasn’t anyone’s fault. You must have seen that adorable picture of Prince George meeting President Obama while in a bathrobe? Well, that’s because it was bedtime and the robe was covering Prince George’s pajamas. The media was there and pictures of the cute encounter spread over the internet. Many headlines never mentioned it was Prince George’s bedtime hence the state of clothing he was in.

18Travelling With the Family

One of the more extreme and dark rules of the Royal Family is that the children will not travel with the parents on a plane. This was made so that if the plane could meet with an accident, their family would lose only one member. This rule is dark but has been put to ensure the safety of the heir to the throne. This rule was broken when 9 months old Prince George travelled with his father by plane for the first time.

19Behaving Silly at Big Events

You can’t blame a child for being silly, be it at home or at a large event. Children love having fun regardless of what family they belong too. You do have to hand it to the royal children to be able to hold themselves at big events and act professional at such a young age. And even they do act silly the media eats it up with “Aren’t they adorable!” or “Look at those precious kids!”

20Making Funny Faces

Yes, making funny faces is also against the rules. This isn’t a strong rule that needs to be followed but is in place to keep the family’s image proper. Prince Harry was known for sticking his tongue out and now his niece is doing the same. The adorable Princess Charlotte has been seen doing this on several occasions reminding the world of her uncle.
