All The Royal Protocols Meghan Markle Is Already Breaking

By KK Angus, 8 February 2018

Meghan Markle is probably going to be our favourite Royal family member from the British monarchy. The Suits star is not yet officially a part of the Royal household but is already making her own rules. Meghan who is set to tie the knot with Prince Harry in May, never gave in to the archaic Royal rules, which were staunchly followed by her would be sis-in-law Kate Middleton and of course, Princess Diana.

Meghan is all about being a rebel and she has already broken a number of Royal protocol, and is set to break a few more. She has made it quite clear that she is not going to be all about her husband but will etch out her own identity. Here are all the Royal norms Meghan has broken:

1Her mom will walk her down the aisle

In a shocking turn of events, Meghan has reportedly asked her mom Doria to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day. This ritual is usually observed by the bride’s father, but since Doria has been such an incredible influence on her, Meghan wanted her to walk the aisle with her. Something like this is not only unprecedented in the Royal family, but it’s also quite unusual by Christian tradition. And we bet, the Queen isn’t too happy.

2She will give a speech at the wedding

Royal brides are seldom heard and in fact, Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton doesn’t even get to speak at formal appearances. But Meghan is not following in the tradition of silence and will make a speech at her wedding with Harry. A Royal bride has never before in the English history, spoken formally at her nuptial ceremony.

But Meghan’s speech is set to be all about how grateful she is to be welcomed into the household, and she will also thank the Queen for her graciousness.

3She skipped the pantyhose

Royal women have an unsaid policy of always wearing pantyhose whenever they are out in public. From Diana to Kate Middleton, everybody has upheld this policy, except of course Meghan Markle. Meghan has not worn a pantyhose for a single one of her Royal photocall or appearance.

4They are marrying in May… which is thought to be unlucky

While the world believes that a spring wedding is the best wedding, the Royal family does not agree with it. Meghan and Harry will marry in May this year, which is peak spring. But apparently, Harry’s ancestor Queen Victoria thought that the fifth month of the year was an unlucky one, and obviously wouldn’t have approved of it today.

5She is not Anglican… yet

Meghan Markle is not of the anglican church, but she is a Catholic. Decades ago, that alone would have been a disqualifier for her Royal position. For years, it was forbidden for any member of the British Royal family to marry a Catholic person. But Meghan is one, but she is to be baptized just before her wedding. Reportedly, Meghan will take up the new religion to honour the Queen, who is known as the defender of the church of England.

6All the PDA

Royal couples usually shy away from expressing affection in public. William and Kate abide by the no-PDA policy and rarely engage in public display of affection. But Meghan and Harry changed the game for any future Royal couple. They weren’t just spotted hugging or getting cozy, but were also spotted kissing each other in public. In fact, their Royal engagement photos are also unusually intimate.

7Meghan has been married before

Marrying a divorcee has always been a huge issue for the Royal family. From King Edward VIII, to Prince Charles, all men had to deal with a lot of baggage to marry a woman who has been married before. But for Prince Harry, things went simpler, as the Royal family is tried to tone down on its archaic traditions.

Meghan used to be married to a producer named Trevor Engelson. But the marriage only lasted two years - from 2011 to 2013. But in spite of her divorcee status, Meghan and Harry faced almost no issues from the Royal family.

8Christmas with Queen Elizabeth

It is very unusual for a commoner who is not yet a part of the Royal household to spend a major holiday with the Queen. But Meghan, the pathbreaker, was invited to spend Christmas with the Queen and the entire family at Sandringham. Not only was she joined by Harry, William and Kate, but also by Charles and Camilla.

9Her magazine cover

Royal would-be’s do not usually pose for tabloid covers because the Royal life completely shuns it. But just a month before her engagement to Harry, Meghan posed for Vanity Cover and also got pretty chatty about her relationship to the Prince. This is highly unusual, and till now, any woman dating a member of the Royal family has never spoken to the paparazzi about her personal life before. But Meghan obviously has her own world, and her own legion of fans and she is a star before a Royal.

10Her pantsuit

Royal women, including Kate Middleton, are very seldom seen in apparel, that is considered to be masculine. They are all mostly only seen on gowns, dresses and endorse feminine chic. But Meghan recently broke a major Royal dress policy when she wore a sharp, black Alexander McQueen pantsuit to an award ceremony with Harry. A suit and trousers is not part of the recommended Royal wardrobe, but Meghan is and always will be a fashion non-conformist.
