The Resort was started by entrepreneur James King who said the idea hit him 14 years ago. "I was MD of a hotel in Grenada and saw a guest go through a beach chair," he said. "As per hotel policy, she was charged $150 for the destruction of property.” It was then he said he had to do something. And so he opened “The Resort”. He says it It’s a place where you can come and have a good holiday without any judgment whatsoever.”

King also mentioned that the idea came to him when he saw plus size people facing awkward and humiliating situations in hotels and resorts. He described during his first job at a resort in Granada, how an overweight young woman sat down in a lounge chair which broke under her weight and she went right through it.
Cruelly though, people started laughing. Moreover, she was even charged $150 for the destruction of property. King says “I tried to convince the owners that we needed furniture other than this plastic flimsy stuff, and they didn’t care. I decided that I had to do something.”

At his resort, King says none of these problems exist. He has had furniture and beds reinforced to take on weight over 30 stone. Even doors and entrances are made wider than usual. Sun loungers are made of wood so strong they can hold a weight of 560 pounds easily.

At the resort for plus size people, guests feel like themselves. They can enjoy and relax in any way they see fit without the baggage of stares and humiliation. They can feel free and enjoy themselves. As one woman from Texas who weighed 375 pounds described, “Being able to feel ‘normal,’ even for a little while, was beyond a gift, “Can you imagine how it feels to walk down a beach and hear people refer to you as a beached whale”? By that comment, you can gather how relaxed such people are who visit King’s resort.

The resort guarantees privacy and is contained over a five-mile-long beach. It is only available for groups of 24 heads and below. The popularity of the plus size beach resort was also featured in ITV’s “18-30 stone Holiday” where eight overweight people were flown to the Bahamas.

Part of that special group was husband and wife couple Adam and Ami Flaherty. Ami weighs 24 stone and says she was embarrassed because her weight ruined their honeymoon in Egypt. But at the resort, she says she can jump into the pool without fear of making a giant splash. In fact picture the event of a plus size person jumping into the pool amid cheers which grow louder for the bigger splash made all because everyone there is a plus size too, that’s one healthy and beautiful environment.

Ami Flahery says she can also lie on a lounger without fearing of smashing it. “In the past, I’ve broken plastic loungers and although I’ve always laughed it off at the time, I was left mortified and wanted the world to swallow me up.” She says in a resort of plus size people; you don’t have to bother about breaking things or not fitting into the environment. You can relax and have a good time.

It’s nice to see a resort with sentiment and providing an environment where plus size people can enjoy themselves without self-esteem or self-conscious issues. This is one healthy atmosphere of people who can truly enjoy themselves in their own Caribbean paradise.
