2Good for migraines

The inner ear piercing is good for reducing migraines and is a holistic method of treatment rather than medication. It has been known and advocated by many to provide immense relief from the problem. The migraine cure even has a particular name called auricular acupuncture and requires the ear ring or piercing to be made at a certain point of the inner ear called the helix known to be a pressure point or meridian that controls migraine. Daith piercings are done at exactly the same point where needles will be used to penetrate the point in auricular acupuncture.

4Daith piercings are larger wounds than regular ear piercings

A Daith piercing usually passes right through the innermost cartilage fold. The piercing usually takes up to 6 weeks to heal if there are no setbacks and infection in which case it could even take months.  Daith piercings are bit more complicated than usual piercings and can attract dirt and germs because of their size. Being a larger cartilage piercing, you need to take more care of it and you’ll be fine.

5Aftercare advice on Daith piercings

Daith piercing after care requires you to avoid contact with hairspray, makeup and perfumes. Your pillow case should be changed every day and your ear should be cleaned after speaking on a cellphone or its best to avoid speaking on that side altogether. You need to clean your ear also after wearing ear muffs or listening to music on headphones.

7Needs to be pierced at a particular pressure point

The Daith piercing actually applies pressure on a point that relieves pressure in the head. Dave Kurlander, a professional who runs the Tempest Artistic studio in Hopewell Junction New York says that the piercing if done for migraine relief should be done on the ear that happens to be on the side where the migraine pain is felt the most.

8Jewelry size needs to be determined according to cartilage thickness

The jewelry size and gauge has to be determined by the person doing the piercing. It depends on thickness of the ear cartilage which means you can’t go choosing something outlandish as it won’t serve any purpose and may even disfigure your ear. Ear cartilage can get damaged easily which is why the piercing should be done by professionals only.

9Some acupuncturists embed steel balls for headache relief

When done by acupuncturists, sometimes a steel ball may also be embedded into the pressure point and whenever you may feel symptoms like nausea, headache, migraine or stress, pushing on the steel ball can provide relief.

10How Daith piercing came to be known

Erik Dakota a student of Hebrew in college first termed the word Da’at, (meaning knowledge) for the piercing saying that the person doing the piercing must have been intelligent enough to know how to perform one. It was Fakir Musafar’s Body Play Magazine that first showcased the piercing called Apadydoe which is a large piercing in the outer conch.  According to him, the Daith piercing was co-created by Erin Dakota and a Jewish lady who wanted a piercing done with metaphysical overtones.

11What determines a true Daith Piercing

A true Daith piercing has to be done in a way that the bottom part of the ring appears to be coming out of the ear. If the entrance and exit hole of the ring can be seen, that means it is not a true Daith. The technique is very advanced and requires a special needle which is curved. This was devised by Erik Dakota and taught at the Advanced Fakir Piercing Intensive.

12Doctors feel otherwise

Whether a Daith Piercing works or not is always up to the wearer. Doctors on the other hand feel that it is totally an unconventional remedy for migraines with no scientific basis. That’s what some doctors also feel about acupuncture and other traditional medicine such as ayurveda and homeopathic but that’s another story. Before thinking about getting a Daith piercing done, it would be best to read up more on the subject and weigh the pros and cons of it for a better decision.
