11 Natural and Helpful Remedies to Give You Instant Relief from Toothache

A toothache can be really nasty, and sometimes nothing seems to reduce the pain. A toothache appearing at the wrong time when you can’t even rest can really seem frustrating. You feel miserable, can’t eat and even talking is a pain. But, what’s worse is a toothache with an infection that spreads. Then you really need to do something about it. In the absence of any immediate relief or precise medication, the natural remedies can definitely help reduce the intensity of your toothache or stop it altogether. These natural remedies are also good for gum disease, cavities, and tooth decay.

1Clove oil

Clove oil is an ancient age-old remedy proven even by science to cure a toothache. In fact, there are even some medical formulations that use clove oil as a cure for a toothache. Cloves contain the ingredient eugenol which is an antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial agent. Clove oil reduces pain and inflammation in a toothache. You can even chew on fresh clove and place it on the affected area. However, the oil is more effective but either use a neutral carrier oil with it or follow the instructions on the bottle as to how many drops to put on your infected tooth.

How to use it

The strength of clove oil in certain brands vary, so how many drops you use will depend on the concentration. Clove oil is quite strong and can even sting gums so avoid using it in children. Alternatively, you can use it with a carrier oil like olive and almond that will neutralize its stinging and bitter effects. Always apply it using a cotton swab. For adults, you can take a tiny ball of cotton, soak it in clove oil and place it in the cavity which causes a toothache. Allow the cotton ball to remain for 15 minutes before removing it.

2Salt water rinse

Common salt works as a natural disinfectant for tooth problems which is why Colgate also has salt based toothpaste. Gargling with salt water solution can soothe a toothache while loosening up food articles stuck in cavities and between teeth. It will also reduce the inflammation and heal any wounds in the mouth faster. Salt water gargle can also reduce the pain and help mouth ulcers heal faster but don’t rub salt directly into them. For a toothache, use half teaspoon salt in a cup of lukewarm water and gargle as and when needed.

3Myrrh wash

Myrrh is derived from the Commiphora tree and is a resin-like substance. It is a known for its antiseptic and astringent properties and can even help relieve a toothache. It is also anti-inflammatory and prevents the spread of bacteria and infection in the mouth.

How to use Myrrh

Myrrh is best purchased as an essential oil or powder. You just need to add two to three drops of Myrrh oil to clean filtered water and gargle with the solution. If you are using the powder, then make a solution of 1 teaspoon of water with 2 cups of water. Mix well and let it remain for half an hour. Bottle the solution and use one teaspoon of it mixed in half cup of water. Gargle with this at least 5 to 6 times daily.

4Hydrogen peroxide rinse

Check the source of pain. If it is a cavity that seems to have an infection accompanied by a headache, fever and even a bad taste in your mouth, then its best you try out hydrogen peroxide which will relieve the symptoms. Purchase a solution of hydrogen peroxide 3 %. Rinse your mouth with it when you have a toothache. Do this for at least 2-3 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with water. Hydrogen peroxide can also whiten teeth.

5Black or peppermint tea

Peppermint tea is an effective remedy for relief from a toothache. Black tea to some extent also relieves tooth pain because of the presence of tannin which is a plant-based polyphenol that acts like an astringent that can reduce pain and swelling temporarily. Peppermint tea acts as a numbing agent numbing the area.

What you should do.

While you can, of course, drink the tea you make, use the tea bag when immediately after soaking when it’s warm. Place it on the infected area for 10 minutes. For peppermint tea, you can brew the tea for 20 minutes. Allow it to cool and then use it as a mouth rinse.

6Garlic

Garlic can sting when eaten but it can also sting and numb your toothache. Though very pungent, raw garlic has a load of health benefits because of the active ingredient allicin found in garlic. It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and fights infection. All you need to do is take a raw piece of garlic and chop it up. Add some salt to it and place it on the affected areas. Others prefer chewing this if you don’t mind the abrasive feeling of the salt.

Alternately you can also make a paste of garlic and salt and then place it on the inflamed tooth for at least 5 minutes. After that, rinse it with lukewarm salt water. Rinsing your mouth with lukewarm water will also relive the sensation of the sting from the garlic.

Yes, vanilla extract can actually relieve your toothache. But what you should realize is that while vanilla extract can flavor cakes and icecreams, it has a horrible bitter taste on its own so don’t take too much of it.
