12 Tactics To Deal with Erectile Dysfunction

By Andrew Alpin, 22 February 2018

There was a time not long ago when impotency was a taboo subject. It was all hushed up because it was considered an embarrassing topic to be hidden. Not anymore, thanks to a liberal society, open drug commercials and advancements in medicine. Erectile dysfunction is now treatable with many men having benefitted from a combination of natural diets and medicine to enjoy a happy marital life.

1What is E.D.?

Doctors define it as the consistent inability to obtain or maintain an erection for physical intimacy. There are 15-30 million American men who suffer from ED every year.  According to urologists and kidney experts, it occurs in 5% of 40-year-old men and a whopping 15-25% in 65-year-old men who are afflicted by this malady. Till the seventies, it was believed that psychological issues caused ED problems but this has been debated in modern medical studies. Today, medical science recognizes that heavy medications, bad lifestyle choices, severe injuries or prolonged heath treatments are the biggest causes of erectile dysfunction.  All said and done, here are 10 proven solutions to deal with it as advocated and recommended by Neil Baum M.D. clinical associate professor of urology at Tulane University School of Medicine.

2Consider your medication

Over-the-counter drugs such as antihistamine, diuretic, heart medications or even pressure medications can be the root of the problem here. It’s true that not every individual reacts to pills the same way, but having said that, drug-induced ED is most common in men older than 50. If you have a feeling the prescribed pill are the cause for your ED, consult your doctor for a change in dosages or switching the drug completely.

3Go easy on the alcohol

Alcohol is a nervous-system depressant as it inhibits your reflexes, creating condition quite opposite to arousal. Yes, even the 2 cocktails can be the cause of concern for many. Chronic alcohol abuse can cause nerve and liver damage as well as hormonal imbalances, as extra alcohol secrets female hormones in men and reduced testosterone which would leave you droopy .So head what Shakespeare has to say to Macbeth that alcohol provokes desire but takes away the performance!  So true!

4Give yourself time

Ageing further reduces the ability of erection. A teenager may gain one in seconds, but when he turns 30 or 40, he may have to wait for a minute or two. As men get older it takes longer for genital stimulation to get an erection. So if a 60-year-old man does not get an erection in a few minutes or more it automatically does not mean he is impotent! By the time man is in his 70s it may take a whole day to regain an erection. It’s a normal consequence of ageing.

5Don't smoke

Nicotine is a blood vessel constrictor as has been proven by medical studies. In the University of Texas, researchers had 2 different experimental groups formed of non-smoking men, one was given a chewing gum laced with nicotine and the others were given placebo gum. There was 23% reduction in physical arousal in the nicotine group as compared to the placebo group.

6Know what's good for the arteries

Keep your arteries clean, as it’s a vascular organ flowing blood all across the body as well to your penile region. If dietary cholesterol or saturated fat clogs arteries, it would also reduce the normal blood flow to the male reproductive organ. So everyman above 38 must watch what they eat as narrowing of arteries begins pretty much from that age itself. High cholesterol-laden food is the single biggest cause for ED as it affects erectile tissues according to Irwin Goldstein M.D.

7Lose weight

Overweight men may have a difficulty in maintaining an erection, as harsh it may sound but it’s a fact. Even if you are 20% heavier than what you are supposed to be, you must try to lose weight as it would reduce the risk of ED. A fitter body oozes more confidence in bed but while you may consider weight training and karate or kick boxing, don’t overdo the cycling bit.

8Don't overdo bike riding

Now, this is a bit of contradiction but it has its logic. Riding a bicycle seems to be the best health exercise to make you lean and mean but sometimes the result is quite the opposite. Riding a bike puts excessive pressure between your legs where the nerve vessels flow to your organ. So get off your seat often or ride on a wide seat with no nose. The idea is NOT to get numb on the penile area which would make you lose all ability for an erection later.

9Refocus your attention

The easiest way to relax is to refocus is with your partner herself! Concentrate on the more sensual aspects of intimacy such as prolonged foreplay and enjoying each other’s company without worrying about an erection at all. The skin is the largest sensual organ that can generate feelings, so you know know where you have to invest your time and energy more now!

10Avoid whole-body stimulants

Caffeine and other similar stimulants constrict the smooth muscle that needs to relax before an erection occurs. So even if coffee is touted as potency enhancer it’s a blatant lie.

11Try to Relax

This can be explained in a simple way, your nervous system operates in 2 ways: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. When the body has the sympathetic nerves dominating our systems, we are in perpetual alert mode. The adrenaline rush prepares for a fight or a flight stance. Blood is pulled from your organ to your brains and muscles, which happens with men who are too anxious about their performance. This results in their body flooding with norepinephrine, an adrenal hormone which is not what you want for physical intimacy. The key is to RELAX and let your parasympathetic system take the driving seat. Signals that travel now will direct the nerves and arteries of your lower regions to expand and let more blood flow in creating a desired erection.

12Eat more watermelon

Well yes, you read it right, those juicy, red-fleshed watermelon is the new aphrodisiac. Scientists have found out that phytonutrients in watermelon have a Viagra-like effect on the body. Further, this fruit contains citrulline, a compound which has relaxing tendencies. Unlike viagra, citrulline does not target just one particular organ of the body but encourages blood vessels to relax all throughout the body which is great news for the immune system, circulatory system and the heart. Enjoy a generous slab of this cooling fruit which would cool you and ready you for some real action.

13Get more physical and have more sessions with your partner

A Finnish study has concluded that men aged between 55-75 who were physical less than once a week had twice the incidence of ED as compared to men who did it at least once a week, so the natural conclusion drawn here is that being regular appears to protect a man from ED.
