Here’s How The Avengers are Supposed To Look According To The Comics

By KK Angus, 20 May 2018

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a billion-dollar franchise. Their fandom grows everyday and it’s only getting bigger. But it all started with comic book. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was Marvel Comics. That also meant that the franchise had its own fan following who migrated to the MCU. But there have been considerable changes made to each and every comic book character, trait-wise and costume-wise.

For instance, Loki and Scarlet Witch look very different in the Marvel comics. As does Vision and Iron Man. Mainly the MCU had to change some costumes to make them more viable and more realistic, and it did lose some edge in the process. But why did MCU change the basic looks of the Avengers? And was it worth it?

1Captain America

In Infinity War, Captain America goes darker and obviously needed a lot of edge. His MCU costume has a lot of added layers and metallic covers, but in the comics, his shield was pretty much his only weapon. The beard is also new as he blends in the Nomad alter ego, but Captain America originally never had a beard. But the fandom has been applauding Chris Evans’ beard.

2His character too

It is also important to note that Captain America’s character arc had to undergo a huge change in order to usher in the new edgier Captain America who is a better risk-taker. The MCU storyline of course helped him to shape up his arc and fit in as a more viable Avenger, who makes the best use of his past.

3Falcon

The Falcon probably got the biggest evolution of all costume-wise at least. In comics, it was just a white and red bodysuit with wings. But in MCU Falcon’s costume is a darker shade of red and his wings are a lot more hi-tech than the comics ever allowed. Plus his bodysuit has metallic detailings and makes him look more threatening.

4Iron Man

Figuring how Iron Man has changed from comics to the movies is difficult especially as his suit has had a lot of versions and in the MCU itself, the superhero has been seen donning different suits, each one more powerful than its predecessor. But thankfully, Iron Man is one of the rare MCU superheroes who has not digressed too much from the original comics and had to be kept true to the books.

5Doctor Strange

The fandom has often joked how Doctor Strange looks like a vintage magician with his beard and cape. In MCU, his costume is a lot layered and heavier and actually has drapes in it. But Marvel Comics actually features Doctor Strange in an extensive bodysuit. But fans agree that his costume needs to evolve further as it makes him look quite ridiculous.

6Scarlet Witch

Elizabeth Olsen recently made news when she opened up about how she is dissatisfied with all the cleavage her Infinity War costume was showing. But in the Marvel Comics, Scarlet Witch’s costume was far worse, as it just consisted of a cape and a bodysuit and stockings. The MCU version is mercifully covered up and more empowering.

7It was not approved

Fans were never really happy about Scarlet Witch’s original costume, as it looked too flimsy and she was projected as an object if male desire. And astonishingly, her costume was around for a very long time before there was any outrage about it.

8Spider-Man

Spider-Man’s suits too have also been through a lot of changes in the MCU movies, unlike the comics. In the Marvel comics, Spidey almost always wears the one-dimensional bodysuit, but in the movies, his suit has gone through a phenomenal transformation. In fact in Infinity War, his suit was one of the most competent ones.

9Spidey suit

Spidey’s suit is actually a part of his storyline as the new Spidey had to learn how to adjust to his advanced suit which is a lot more productive than his old suit and actually enables him and processes his powers.

10Star-Lord

It was important for Star-Lord to look more grounded which is why his jacket and trousers had to make the cut for his MCU costume. But in the comics, he wears a longer jacket which is sweeping. But in the films the clothes he wears makes him look almost regular, as he hails from earth.

11Thor

Looks-wise Chris Hemsworth is the perfect Thor, but in the comics, he is a grim god and does not have Thor’s MCU sense of humour. His suit too has terrific Norse detailing including an embellished metallic arm, which looks medieval. And of course his winged helmet which fans have always wanted to see on screen but it has mostly been missing.

12Black Panther

Thankfully Black Panther’s costume did not go through a lot of changes as the Vibranium remained a very important aspect of his set-up and character. Though his MCU costume has a more metallic sheen.

13Vision

Vision look entirely different from his character in the Marvel Comics. His suit for instance has a different colour palette and also a totally different vibe. But MCU needed Vision to look less vibrant and more beaten and weary which is where the red and blue colour scheme comes in. The MCU Vision is perhaps what the Marvel creators envisioned but got lost in the yellow and green colours.

14Black Widow

Black Widow is the only Avenger who is shaping up to look more and more like her comic book self. The Black Widow solo movie which is coming out might have something to do with it. But Black Widow’s costume has thankfully retained its basic integrity since it was important for the character to look tougher than most. She is the only Avenger who goes to battle without a weapon and the MCU bosses kept in mind that her suit should be a weapon and shield in itself.

15Loki

Did you know that in Marvel comics Loki wore a bodysuit and actually looked like a cartoon villain. It is much easier to take Loki seriously now that he has a proper suit that is much more manageable and gives him a sense of purpose.
