Scribner described how fascinating it was to see Clara signing letters into Cooks' hand one at a time. 'It was fascinating to watch as she signed one letter at a time into his hand. When Cook asked her if she looked pretty, Clara blushed and laughed. Her seatmate who by this time had also learned a few signs conveyed a “yes” to Cook.

Speaking to reporters who got wind of the story Clara said 'For the last hour of the flight we just were talking, having a conversation about life, they call you extraordinary but it's just something that you do. He took such joy in a conversation that we take for granted.'
