Meet Frida, the Guardian Angel Who Is Working Tirelessly To Save Lives in Earthquake Hit Mexico

By Andrew Alpin, 25 September 2017

Mexico was recently the victim of a huge 7.1 earthquake on Tuesday last the 19th of sept in which more than 305 people have been killed thus far. Thousands have been injured and still the death toll is increasing as more bodies are being pulled out of debris and rubble. What is saddening to note that this was the second earthquake in two weeks when the earlier one hit Oaxaca leaving the area in a piece of rubble. Large-scale operations are still underway even as I speak but among the devastation and death comes the tale on one hero who has been relentlessly and tirelessly working to save lives and that is Frida, the rescue dog.

1Frida works for the Navy

Frida the Labrador dog is contributing to the rescue efforts in a major way. She is part of the canine squad or SEMAR which is part of the Mexican Navy. The lovable braveheart works hard trying to sniff out survivors.

2She looks cool in her gear

Frida also has her own protective gear that includes customized boots to protect her paws and goggles for her eyes. Till date Frida the rescue dog has saved more than 50 people in the short time she has been working with the Mexican navy. Several of the people saved by Frida were those trapped in the rubble at Oaxaca.

3Frida sniffs out people buried under the rubble

Despite the magnitude of the tragedy, Frida works round the clock looking for people buried under layers of debris and mud. Had it not been for her super powerful nose, many of those rescued mighty have succumbed to their fatal circumstances.

4Frida has saved 50 people so far

As one of the worst earthquakes to hit Mexico in recent years, the earthquake registered a 7.1 on the Richter scale. Among the 50 who were saved during Frida’s career in the Navy, 12 were from Oaxaca who have much to be grateful for to this four-legged stalwart. The earthquake at Oaxaca was Frida’s real test and she came through in flying colors. Since then she has become a hero and has become immensely popular on social media.

5Honored by the president on Twitter

Frida is seven years old and perhaps the oldest member of her squad that includes 7 dogs working as retrievers for search and rescue. She is the current star of Mexican twitterati where even the President’s office honored her with a tweet.

6Watch her in action

Frida and her canine squad are still working day and night looking for survivors who may still be buried beneath the rubble. It is most unfortunate that the death toll is climbing but hopefully those with chances of survival may be found by the four-legged guardian angels so very important in disasters like these.
