2Melissa Biggs Bradley says digestive system completely shuts down while on plane

The founder of the luxury firm Indagare, Melissa Biggs Bradley, shared the secrets of not eating while travelling in the airplane. "Ten years ago, it was [a cabin crew member] on Singapore Airlines on what was, at the time, the longest flight in the world (17 hours from Singapore to New York). She told me that her tried-and-true trick was not eating in-flight. Basically, at super high altitude, your digestive system shuts down completely. Someone said to me it’s like being under anesthesia. So when you get off the plane, everything restarts and [your digestive system] has so much more work to do and so it makes you more tired." she said.

3Scientists refuted claims that eating on flights are not good

However, there are some people who are having doubts on the statement of this lady that eating while travelling is not good for health and it contributes towards jet lag. Scientists have completely refuted her claims by saying that there is literally no evidence of what she said. However, the lady still backs her statement and said, “I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely been hungry on every overseas flight I’ve ever taken. Surely that’s a sign my digestive system hasn’t shut down."

4Dietician says digestive system shutting down during a flight has no scientific foundation

There is no doubt people get bored on a long flight and they indulge in food simply because they are being confined in a long steel tube and doing nothing. However, nutritionists have also contradicted Ms. Briggs’s claims. Registered dietitian Carolyn Pallister said, “Suggestions that your digestive system shuts down during a flight has no scientific foundation. By restricting yourself and not eating for long periods of time on a long flight you are likely to feel weak, shaky, and could even suffer from headaches and low mood.”

5There are people who love to eat on flight and they would buy Ms. Pallister’s point

Many would buy Ms. Pallister’s point as there are plenty of people who binge on flights. Also, many would argue that when the digestive system really shuts down then why would they put bathroom on the airplane? There are people who go there are relieve themselves and that is testimony that everything works normally on an airplane.

6It is advisable to eat moderately on an airplane

However, if you take into account the fact that sitting idle for long hours on an airplane means that you burn very less amount of calories and that airplane’s foods are not always of best quality, it can be advisable that you must cut down on your food intake. But, at the same time, it is not best of things to completely eliminate the food intake.

7It is better if you carry your own edibles

As a matter of fact, it is always better if you carry your own stuffs. Stuffs like granola bars and bananas should be carried in your luggage. It is not a big deal to sneak your edibles through the custom checks. Hence, it is always better to carry your own food items when you are travelling long distances. Long hour flights takes a toll on your body and hence you should have foods in limited amount to ward-off any chances of feeling weak, shaky, and suffering from headaches and low mood.

8You should continue doing what you have been doing all these years

It is definitely not advisable to get influenced with such a thing that eating while being in the air causes you jet lag. You should continue doing what you have been doing all these years while travelling in an airplane. Don’t binge, but you can eat foods in moderation and enjoy every bit of your journey in the air.
