7 Curious Facts about What Your Appearance Says About You

By Andrew Alpin, 25 April 2018

Research has proven that the science of reading faces or physiognomy is a clear indication of a human’s personality. However, there is much debate on the subject where some scientists feel it is fake. University College London professor Carmen Lefevre says that a person’s appearance is the direct cause of a mix of hormones, genes and lifestyle which is why it can provide a lot of facts about personality and nature. Here are 7 scientific studies that have proven how a person’s face can reveal a lot about personality and other things. How you smile or how you pose for a selfie also reveals a lot about you. So read on.

1 The facial shape

Believe it or not but University of Colorado Boulder professor Keith Welker proved something fantastic through a study on the soccer world cup 2010. He confirmed that the number of goals scored by a player could be indicated by the ratio between the height and width of a player’s face.

How to calculate the facial ratio

While the average ratio is 2, men like Abraham Lincoln had a ratio of 1.93. To calculate the ratio, you have to measure the distance between the upper line of your eyes and upper lip. The measure the distance between your ears. Now calculate the ratio between these two figures that will show how high or low your chances of success. Scientists say that a lower ratio indicates a higher chance of success.

2The prominent cheekbones

University College London scientists conducted a research which proved that men with high testosterone levels had thick cheekbones and broad faces. The testosterone levels had a direct impact on aggression, rebellion and dominance. They affirmed that women also subconsciously feel this.

Movie directors usually use such factors when choosing men for playing roles of an alpha male, rebels, villains or warriors.

3Wrinkles

We all know that wrinkles are an indicator of age. But, they are also an indication of nature and character. Individuals have different ways of frowning, laughing, crying etc. There are different muscles that are used to create such functions like raising an eyebrow. Now when a person is prone to using a particular expression or facial emotion more often, wrinkles will appear more in that particular place of the face. Thus wrinkles can predict the prominently used emotions even when a person is calm and composed.

4A person’s profession

When people take selfies or photographs, they are prone to displaying certain profiles of their face thinking that to be the most attractive side of them Studies in the University of South Australia proved that there are more factors at play here. The research showed that engineers, chemists, scientists and mathematicians were prone to showing their right cheek to a camera. Artists and psychologists tend to show their lefty side to a camera.

The difference between genders

Women were prone to turning their head to the right and displaying their lefty cheek more often. Research showed that the left side of a face is usually regarded as more attractive simply because it is controlled by the brain’s right side which is responsible for emotions.

5Your selfie as your autobiography

Nanyang Technology University Professor Lin Kee in a research study made an analysis of 123 different selfies taken from the Chinese blogging site Sina Weibo. He discovered a connection that proved something between people’s selfies and their personality traits.

What selfies meant

She found that people liked taking selfies of themselves from below while some took it from above. Those who had friendly personalities took selfies from above and were not afraid of themselves appearing as funny in a photo. Such people she found were positive to new experiences and demonstrated positive emotions. Those who took selfies from above and made the infamous duck face indicated a neurotic personality.

The glitch here was that scientists were not able to decipher the personalities accurately from the photos because people always tend to look better in photo selfies than in real life not forgetting the photo apps that touch up photos removing facial lines and contours.

6How the size of your nose reveals your ambitions

In 2013, a study revealing 1,700 face photos which highlighted noses was published in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery. 14 various shapes of noses were studied and analyzed and connected with different personality types. It showed that ambitious people tend to have large noses where such people also displayed a tendency to be perfectionists.

Scientists found that the tip of the nose if found to be big and meaty, indicated a good investor and financier. A small delicate tip indicated a careless attitude about money and savings.

7The Dorian Gray effect

Identical Twins it has been found can have differences in facial features with age. This showed that genes weren’t only a factor but the lifestyle of a person. Unhealthy habits printed their mark on a person’s face over time and are a clear proof as to the type of life a person leads and what one can expect from such people.

Alcoholics can easily be identified but one thing needs to be mentioned here is that evil doesn’t always show up on a face because sometimes the most gruesome of killers had very innocent faces.

Beauty and kindness go hand in hand

Professor of psychology at Princeton, Alexander Todorov affirmed how we form an opinion of new person immediately but such judgments can be deceiving. This is based on what is called the Halo effect where beautiful people are stereotyped as both smart and kind. It is the stereotype halo effect that connects appearance with personality.

The demonstration of the theory

Todorov asked students to make an assessment of a variety of composite portraits. The assumptions thereof were that those with childlike features, round faces and big eyes were regarded as naïve, fragile, obedient, kind and sincere whereas those with ugly asymmetrical and gloomy faces were connected with an unfriendly personality.

Why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover

In spite of theories in paces which are obviously a generalized opinion, there are sometimes people who prove such theories wrong. In reality, a fellow human being should never be judged before knowing them totally because those who make bad first impressions may turn out to be good and those who make good ones are the deceitful lots. But this doesn’t prove the above theories wrong because humanity has slowly evolved with its fair share of those perfecting and disguising their true mannerisms and expressions. Take a look at the rock, he is a softie. And then read the next paragraph of three faces in this article.
