Migraines and headaches can really get you down. It can last for hours and when nothing seems to work, it can be extremely frustrating to the point of being traumatic. The throbbing and pulsating pain in your temples makes you want to literally bang your head against the door. Although you may have heard about several treatments for migraine, I’m sure such remedies may not apply in every case due to the possibility of migraines being too severe. Is there anything at all that you can do about it? Well, rather than joining the advice bandwagon, this explores the possible reasons as to what causes migraine in otherwise healthy people.

Migraines are the one disorder that can never be pinpointed for an accurate medical solution. Headaches and migraines are a complex reason of environment, lifestyle, genetics and neurological factors with levels that differ from person to person.

1What causes Migraine?

Migraines affect more than 300 million people around the world with 20 million attacks daily. Women are more prone to migraines than men by 18% and that is indeed alarming. Several experts feel that migraines are because of a few main factors.

Excess blood flow to the brain: Studies have found that migraines are caused by excessive blood flow to the brain which increases by at least 300%.

Neurological disorders: Neurological disorders related to nerve cell activity can also cause migraines. The increase of the cell activity causes the pain.

Changes in serotonin: Migraines can be caused from inflamed blood vessels where low levels of serotonin have been observed to cause migraine.

Vascular constriction: initial constriction of blood vessels and reduced blood flow which is followed by dilation and blood vessels stretching can activate pain causing neurons in the brain.

2Vitamin deficiency

Now we come to the antihero of our topic, vitamin deficiencies!! The latest research has found that it is vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid supplements actually reduced migraines over a six month period. A joint study in neurology published in the European Journal of Neurology 2004 stated that migraines could be prevented by high doses of riboflavin or vitamin B2.

When exploring what causes a migraine, Vitamins B6 and B12 also reduced levels of homocysteine which could be produced by dysfunctional genes or gene mutations. An increase of homocysteine makes one extremely vulnerable to migraine attacks. The dosage of the vitamin depends on the genotype of the individual.

Moreover, levels of homocysteine production can be increased by some gene mutations and dysfunctions, which can make you more prone to migraine attacks. It was discovered that vitamins B6 and B12 reduce homocysteine levels. In addition, researchers found that depending on your genotype, one may need a higher or lower dose in order for it to work.
