Covid-19 Vaccine’s Mrna Technology Helps Scientists Discover World’s First Cure for Heart Attack

By Andrew Alpin, 20 April 2022

Hearts injured by cardiac arrest can now be repaired using the same genetic tracking technology that was used to develop Covid-19 vaccinations. Researchers at King’s College London have discovered genetic codes known as mRNAs responsible for the production of proteins necessary for the growth and development of healthy heart cells. This new discovery may be revolutionary since it can potentially be the world’s first cure for heart attacks.

Heart attack victims may one day be cured thanks to ground-breaking research.

Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were created using the same technique. Prof. Mauro Giacca, the study’s lead researcher, said: “We all have a set number of muscle cells in our heart and they are exactly the same ones we will die with. After a heart attack, the heart is unable to mend itself. As a team, we have been trying to identify a medication that can persuade remaining cells to divide.”

What is a heart attack?

A heart attack is a medical emergency that occurs when the heart stops working properly. A myocardial infarction, which is another name for a heart attack, occurs when the heart’s muscle doesn’t receive enough oxygen-rich blood. Without treatment to restore blood flow, the damage to the heart muscle increases over time.

What causes heart attacks?

The most common cause of a heart attack is coronary artery disease (CAD). A coronary artery spasm, or abrupt contraction, can cause blood to stop flowing to the heart muscle, but this is a less common cause.

Are a specific group of people at a higher risk of a heart attack?

Heart disease and heart attacks are made more likely by various factors, including age, gender, race, and ethnicity. In the medical community, these are referred to as risk factors. For example, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are all risk factors for heart disease.

Some risk factors, such as your age or family’s medical history, are out of your control. However, you can take precautions to reduce your risk by altering the factors you can influence.

What are the signs that show up before a heart attack?

The most common signs of a heart attack are chest pain and shortness of breath. For the most part, heart attacks cause pain in the centre or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that disappears and reappears frequently. Pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain can all be symptoms of discomfort. In contrast, other symptoms include a feeling of faintness, dizziness, or heaviness. You may also experience a sudden drop in temperature, and your jaw, neck, or back may be in pain. In addition, your arm or shoulder may ache, perhaps on one or both sides. Nausea and vomiting are two further signs of a heart attack that should not be ignored. These additional symptoms are more common in women.

Heart attacks are responsible for the death of thousands of people worldwide every year.

Every year, the obstructed blood flow to the heart caused by a heart attack kills thousands of people worldwide. Up to 100 billion heart cells can be killed by cardiac arrests that cause serious damage to the heart muscle. Since the human heart cannot repair itself, cardiac arrest victims often suffer long-term disability due to the debilitating scars they sustain.

It was almost impossible to heal an injured human heart before

A few years ago, regenerating an injured human heart was only a dream. But now, Micro RNAs are being injected into the heart using the same technology as the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to reach and stimulate the growth of surviving cardiac cells. As a result, instead of a scar, the patient will have new muscle tissue thanks to the replacement of the dead cells, thus making the production of a cure for heart attacks possible.

Scientists are now trying to develop medication that prevents cells from dying after a heart attack.

The British Heart Foundation Center for Research Excellence at King’s College London is where Giacca’s team is based. They are currently attempting to develop a medication that will prevent cells from dying after a heart attack and aid in the regeneration of new heart cells.

RNA therapy can save millions of lives

According to scientists, the novel RNA (ribonucleic acid) therapy can save millions of patients suffering from heart failure. Pig heart regeneration trials have proved effective thus far, and human trials are expected within the next two years.

After a heart attack, what to do to help yourself heal?

After your heart has been injured after a heart attack, your heart’s rhythm and capacity to pump blood can be diminished. Further cardiovascular problems, such as stroke, renal problems and peripheral artery disease, maybe on the cards for you (PAD).

Following a heart attack, you can lessen your risk of developing long-term health issues by taking the following steps:

Physical activity:

Discuss your daily routine and job duties with your medical team. After a heart attack, your doctor may advise you to restrict your activities, such as job, travel, or sexual relations.

Lifestyle changes:

Heart health and quality of life can be improved by adopting a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, stopping smoking, reducing stress and taking prescribed drugs. To assist you in making these alterations to your way of life, consult your doctor about enrolling in a programme known as cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiac rehabilitation:

Everyone recovering from a heart attack, heart failure, or any other condition that requires medical treatment should participate in cardiac rehabilitation. Exercise is an important part of cardiac rehab, which is a medically supervised programme.

Education about healthy living, including good food, taking prescribed medication, and methods to help you quit smoking. Assistance in reducing stress and enhancing psychological well-being through counselling. Your healthcare team, exercise and nutrition specialists, physical therapists, counsellors, or mental health professionals will all be involved in your cardiac rehabilitation. But now, a cure for heart attacks may be arriving very soon!
