Though your mouth is a tiny place, a lot goes on inside the chambers. Harmful bacteria can always invade it and cause problems in your overall well-being if you do not care for it properly. We bring you some such common dental issues that could cause trouble when left unattended.

1Bad Breath

The most common problem is the bad breath, also known as Halitosis. Bad breath is caused due to the layers of bacteria sitting on the tongue. Some other reasons could be a dry mouth which may occur during sleep or due to a glandular condition. Consuming certain strong foods such as onion and garlic can also cause this condition. Postnatal drip could be another prominent cause. It is important to scrape your tongue off the settled bacteria so that cough and phlegm are not caused leading to bad odour.

2Sores: Canker Sores, Herpes

Canker sores are not caused due to virus. They may occur due to common cold or might be plain hereditary in nature. They take around 12 days to disappear and most people allow it to take its own course of time. When it turns chronic, laser treatment can be an option to get rid of it. Herpes is caused due to a virus (Herpes Zoster) and is contagious through direct contact of the infected person. It affects the person by causing lessions and small blisters around the mouth and lips. There is no cure for this disease but it can be treated with antiviral pills and creams.

3Cavities

When the bacteria are left in the mouth to grow due to improper hygiene, cavities are caused. They feed on sugar and starch remains on and in between our teeth. The bacteria secrete acid waste after feasting on it which destroys the tooth enamel. These areas are tough for the toothbrush to reach and clean.

Gum disease is caused by three factors: Improper oral hygiene, smoking and hereditary predisposition. People usually come to recognise this quite late when the condition has worsened. Teenagers can have Gingivitis, which is a mild disease. Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that can cause even a heart attack or stroke.
