Record cold was forecasted for the last weekend from Montana to Wisconsin, even as far as Oklahoma with temperatures resembling January rather than April. The cold and snowfall is expected to continue into the second week of April.

Weaker channels are calling the freakish cold a “ridiculous late season arctic outbreak” and there are also warnings of a possible freeze right into the Deep South. The National weather service has forecasted temperatures, 30 degrees below normal in the Northern and central plains where high temperatures will range up to 10-20 degrees below normal. Adding to the misery will be winds that are below zero. Montana has even issued a cold advisory for baby livestock fearing the animals won’t adapt to the cold.

St Cloud, Madison, Wisconsin and Minnesota got the brunt of this week’s snowstorm where St Cloud reported record lows at this time of the year with temperatures of 0 degrees. Minneapolis has also been breaking cold records where parts of the Twin Cities had snow of around 7 – 12 inches that made it the heaviest April snow in 134 years. Twin cities weather read 0 degrees today April 8th with Minneapolis hitting -5 degrees with two hours of snow.

According to the Climate prediction centre, April 9th to 13th will see unsettling weather with incessant rainfall the west of the cascades. Further toward the east, a cold mass air may settle in CONUS up to the 11th which would lead to temperatures of 10-15 degrees F below normal. The record cold may also convert rain showers into snowfall instead along the East Coast. Today 8th April saw freezing temperatures in Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Cyclonic weather according to the GFS or Global Forecast System may bring heavy snowfall to North Dakota and Northwest Minnesota after developing on April 13th but according to the ECMWF, the cyclone may happen later bringing heavy snow in those regions as well as Wyoming. The weather reports are issuing hazardous snowfall for this period in second week of April as the cyclone will deepen lee of the Rockies.

The Easter Weekend was predicted to be one with heavy snow making it a white Easter. Arctic winds will push the mercury below freezing point where the cold is expected to last throughout April. It will not let up until May making it the coldest pre-spring weather in five years. The incessant cold is largely due to colder easterly winds blowing into Western Europe.
Temperatures can even plummet to -10 degrees C as low solar activity is encouraging the freezing weather with the changes of the Jet Stream bringing bitter Arctic winds in April.
