By Andrew Alpin, 27 February 2018

The man with the world’s largest Brain tumor was successfully operated upon with the brain tumor removal surgery lasting a good seven hours. The incident that happened in India was a testing one for doctors who described the brain so large it looked like a second head.

1The world’s largest brain tumor

The tumor was described as the largest in the world by doctor Trimurti Nadkarni, the surgeon in charge of the operation who said it weighed 1.873 kgs. The tumor was removed from a 31-year-old man.

2The complex surgery took place on Feb. 14th

The mammoth task of removing the world’s largest brain tumor took place at the BYL Nair charitable hospital in Mumbai on February 14th where Doctor Nadkarni laid claim to the world’s largest brain tumor based on comparative studies of such incidents around the world.

3The tumor was stuck in his brain

Nadkarni also added that the surgery was tricky and life-threatening for the patient Santlal pal a cloth merchant from UP, India. The tumor was embedded firmly in Pal’s brain but doctors took seven long hours to finally get it out. Only when the man was stable in recovery did the doctors make the news public.

4It looked like two heads

Santlal Pal is a 31-year-old cloth merchant who ran a shop in a village in the State of Uttar Pradesh, India. The man traveled the Interstate journey just so he could get the surgery done. The swelling in the past 6 months had increases and the brain tumor was turning into an unbearable mass almost the size of his head. It also measured 30cm by 30 cm according to Dr. Nadkarni.

5His condition was becoming unbearable

Pal’s life was becoming unbearable with the weight of the tumor-bearing down on his head. Doctors advised him that brain tumor removal surgery was the only option which is why he travelled the long distance from UP to Mumbai in Maharashtra, India.

6They had to cut his scalp open for brain tumor removal

Ten percent of the brain tumor had already lodged itself into Pal’s skull while the rest protruded out. For surgeons, this was a tricky and complicating factor where they had to cut open his scalp to gain access to the tumor mass. The doctors were not confident of being successful which is why the news was kept under wraps till after the surgery and stabilization of pal in recovery.

Dr. Nadkarni a professor in neurosurgery is also the head of the department in the hospital where the surgery took place. He says the size of the tumor was daunting and it worried doctors who weren’t totally confident they would be able to remove it. The tumor was compressing the brain.

7He began losing his vision

Dr. Nadkarni says that the tumor made it seem as if the patient Pal had two heads, one on top of the other.  The pressure was so great that it had begun affecting pal’s optic nerve and impeded his vision which he was losing gradually.

8The biggest problem was lack of medical expertise in his village

The biggest problems Indian patients like pal have is the lack of surgery facilities and medical expertise in villages. Given the fact they are hospitals for common maladies, anyone remotely related to pal’s condition may have to travel a huge distance to seek medical help for their condition. Many in India who cannot afford quality treatment opt for government hospitals that may be attended by the best doctors but are heavily understaffed, overburdened and outnumbered by way of basic facilities because of the sheer number of patients crowding the halls every day.

9Required ventilator support after the operation

Doctor Nadkarni headed the dicey brain tumor removal operation on pal and was assisted by five other surgeons. He was also given 11 units of blood and for three days survived on a ventilator for breathing support.

10It would have been dangerous to his life

Dr. Nadkarni says that as of now it isn’t known if the tumor was cancerous or not but he was happy that Pal wasn’t showing any symptoms of cancer. He also mentioned that there was no other solution, the tumor had to be taken out or eventually, it would have posed a huge danger to his life.

11He is now on route to recovery

As for Pal, he is fine and recuperating well. He was last reported to be walking around and is well on his way to recovery. He is now famous for having undergone the world’s largest brain tumor removal till of course someone else beats him to it.
