Fourteen years ago Facebook revolutionized worldwide social interaction. From its original avatar as “the facebook” for a college community it has grown in strength to a worldwide phenomenon of FACEBOOK. Today Facebook is a multibillion dollar conglomerate and no one is happier than its founder Mark Zuckerberg. Let’s trace the social network’s origins from the time it all began and see how Facebook has changed over time.
Facebook debuts on February 4th 2004 at Harvard University, the alma mater of Mark Zuckerberg, did you see the social Network?? The movies will give you a good idea about it. A month later it also connected Stanford, Columbia and Yale.

During that time the pages were minimalistic and notifications on your profile said “this is you”. Even updates always began with ‘is’ which always read, “Mark is mighty pleased”. “Mark is making millions” and so on. This is a typical 2005 Facebook profile page shown by Zuckerberg at a conference. It still resembled MySpace.

On sept 20th 2005 was a defining moment when “the’’ was dropped and the official “Facebook was born. In 2006, it got an adult makeover and the birth of the minified depicting a play by play of a users activity, this took Facebook up several notches in popularity as it allowed you to track friends activity too. Remember the poking on Facebook? The POKE allowed you to flirt, or simply crap out your friends.
In the FAQ section this is what Facebook said
"We have about as much of an idea as you do. We thought it would be fun to make a feature that had no real purpose and to see what happens from there. So mess around with it, because you're not getting an explanation from us."

Now Facebook was accessible by anyone above 13. If you had an email address, you could access Facebook. News feed was also launched in 2007.
By 2007, anyone 13 years and older with an email address could access Facebook. This was also the year that the News Feed launched, which meant you could see what all your friends had been doing since the last time you logged in. Once mobile, Social networking was never the same, mobile soared Facebook to new levels. A new homepage and real time news feed also makes an appearance on Facebook and some even disliked it because who wanted to see what a person was constantly doing.

2010 saw a whole new homepage with photos on top of the page. Then in 2011 there was a whole new design. Now you could add your cover photo too. This was the year of the biggest ever change in Facebook, THE TIMELINE” the timeline presumably changed everything and Facebook was never the same again. In 2011, Facebook also enabled video calling.

Although larger photos through a new photo viewer were installed, stalking became easier on Facebook because of the real time activity feed added to the home page. In 2012 Instagram also made an appearance on Facebook which purchased the company for $1 billion.

Over the last few years, Facebook has added hash tags and verified accounts much like twitter. It also recreated an app center with almost 500 apps. Finally trending topics also rolled out this year. What’s more, Facebook changed over time to provide monetization for business with ads and post boosting activity on pages. From a small social network, it is now a multibillion dollar conglomerate and a thriving business.
