'American Horror Story: Cult' Episode 6 review: 5 things we learned

By Milos Kitanovic, 12 October 2017

Kai Anderson (Evan Peters) continues to climb the political ladder by getting rid of everyone who stands in his way, while Ally (Sarah Paulson) tries to deal with the fact that her wife Ivy (Alison Pill) is a part of notorious Cult that's been terrorizing the city for quite some time. However, "Mid-Western Assasin," the latest episode of "American Horror Story: Cult" deals with so much more than just that.

It also dives deep into the relationships within a cult, and in the midst of it, Kai reveals a masterplan. We also see Ally stronger than ever, trying to expose the cult and its leader. With all of that said, let's break down each segment of the episode and try to figure out what it all means for the future of the story. So bear with us, as we further explore key moments defining moments of the "AHS: Cult" Episode 6: "Mid-Western Assasin."

1The mass shooting controversy and the flash forward

The episode opens up with the mass shooting at the political rally, a scene that was edited out of respect for the Las Vegas attack victims and their families. So we only hear the gunshots, see dead people on the ground and Kai lying on the stage. The sequence ends with the police telling Ally to drop her weapons, and we are led to believe that she is the attacker.

2Ally sets Meadow free and learns about her involvement in the cult

After a controversial cold opening, the episode takes us back to last week, as we see Meadow (Leslie Grossman) telling Ally about the cult and how everyone is in it before the kidnapper takes her down. It is then that Ally decides it is time to fight back. She goes across the street to set Meadow free and take her somewhere safe. They go to the restaurant; the only place Ally thinks it's safe. That is where Meadow opens up and proceeds to tell about her involvement in the cult. Being the person who was not able to find her place in the world, she became an easy target to charismatic cult leader Kai Anderson. We learn that Meadow was in love with Kai, as he never missed the chance to tell her how special she is.

But soon, everything fell apart because she learned that he said the same thing to Ivy. That is where Ally interrupts, expressing her disbelief about Ivy's involvement as Kai represents everything her wife hates. But more on Ivy later. Next, Ally takes Meadow to the only man she trusts. Unfortunately for her, that man is Dr. Rudy Vincent (Cheyenne Jackson), who just happens to be Kai's older brother. But of course, Ally doesn't know that, and she leaves Meadow with him and says she is going to be back in a couple of hours.

3Ivy's hate for Ally explained

In yet another flashback, Ivy is freaking out because she saw that Trump supporter she and Winter (Billie Lourd) tied in the basement with a severed arm. She thinks that they are going to jail because of it, but Winter assures her that everything is going to be okay and introduces her to her brother Kai. Then, after he asked her what fills her heart with dread, we learn that Ivy despises her wife much more than we initially thought. And it goes much deeper than the fact that Ally voted for Jill Stein.

As it turns out, Ivy hates Ally because she is their son's biological mother and Ally never missed a chance to rub that into Ivy's face by referring to Oz as "my baby." But we also learn that Ivy just wants the full custody. So Kai tells her that he will make sure no judge would ever grant Ally custody over Ozzy.

4Another gruesome death

Next, we see Kai using fear to gain political points in the town hall, as he speaks about "monsters under the bed." And just when we thought that he is getting all the support that he needs, Sally Keffler (Mare Winningham) interferes. She calls Kai and Trump the flies that circle the garbage that's already piling up in America and announces her candidacy for the city council election, much to the pleasure of everyone is in the room.

Later on, Ally shows up at Sally's door demanding her help in exposing the cult. And just when Sally started to believe her, the clowns enter the room. And while Ally manages to hide, Sally, on the other hand, is not so lucky and she ends up being surrounded by the clowns. And after learning that Sally is still logged into Facebook, Kai begins to write a suicide note about her realizing that everything she believes in is wrong, before eventually pulling the trigger. Then, after searching the house, Ivy finds Ally but chooses not to tell anyone.

5Kai’s masterplan revealed

After escaping the house, Ally then goes straight to Dr. Vincent only to reveal that Meadow is gone. Then, we are back again at that political rally where Kai gives his speech. Only this time, we take a closer look at the shooter who is in fact Meadow. Then, her flashback from earlier continues, and we learn that Kai was able to convince her to help him with his plan, which is set to be his greatest deception to date.

Back to present time, Meadow shoots Kai in the leg before she opens fire on the crowd. Ally tries to stop her, they fight over the gun, and Meadow ends up killing herself. But unfortunately for Ally, she ends up with the gun in her hands when the police arrive. And the episode ends with Ally being arrested and Kai smiling because everything went according to plan.
