Having manners and being polite is something that can help you go a long way in not only your professional life but also in your personal life. You need to give respect to others in order to gain respect and one way to do it is to know the rules of etiquettes that one must follow. 1 Stand during introduction

Introducing someone in a formal setting is the first step of building a relationship with that person or company. Whenever you go for a meeting or an interview or any formal do, whenever someone introduces you to any person that you don’t know, always stand up and acknowledge the person being introduced with a bright smile. That unknown person should feel that you are genuinely happy to know them and build a relationship from there.

2 Avoid using mobile phones

Mobile phones are banes of etiquettes. People cannot keep their fingers and eyes away from their phones even during important meetings and this often irks the person conducting the meeting or giving an important presentation. Be polite and switch off the phone for the duration of the meeting.

3 Greet people

Greeting people is a simple and sweet way of making someone’s day bright and cheerful. When you go out for a jog or to walk your dog, just greet everyone you meet with a smile on the way even if you don’t know them. You don’t know when you smile can brighten someone’s day up.

4 Hold the door

Holding the door for anyone, not just elderly people and women, is the best way to have manners and be in good books of anyone. It is a very simple thing to do and takes about 30 seconds to a minute to let someone else go through before you while entering a building or even while leaving the building.

5 Be punctual

Punctuality is something that shows that you as a person are organized and know how to manage your time. When someone asks you to be present for a meeting or interview at a certain time, it is better to reach the place atleast 15 mins early in order to be present when the person in question comes out to meet you. In case, you are stuck in traffic or some problem, it is polite to give a call to your contact and let them know and apologize for the delay.

6 Don’t drink too much

Office parties are a great thing to unwind and get to know your colleagues and seniors in an informal setting. But one mistake like making an off color joke or drinking too much in the gathering and losing your bearings can make you lose your respect amongst your peers and get you an bad image in the office.

7 Be polite always

One of the basic ways to be polite is to say a simple ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ whenever you are asking someone to do something for you. It is a favor and you should say please and a thank you after the work is done. Being polite not only goes a long way, it leaves a nice impression in other people’s minds.
