By Jatin Sharma, 10 March 2017

Nails are a mystery in itself. They serve as protection to your fingers and basically make your digits look good. But underneath all that, there is a living tissue that provides nutrition and keeps the nails healthy. However, if you are seeing your nails breaking or splitting for some reason, we have 5 reasons for you to consider before you go to a doctor for your nail problems.

1 Iron deficiency

First and foremost reason for concave or depressed nails like spoons is that your body is low on iron and/or is anemic. Iron intake helps formation of hemoglobin which is a molecule that helps the blood carry fresh red blood cells containing oxygen to the nails in your digits. If the body is craving for Iron and is short on it, your nails won’t grow as fast as they should and it will be brittle and unhealthy.

2 Too much typing and texting

Today’s world of excessive use of mobiles and laptops and computer has made a bad impression on our nail health. Thanks to constant and excessive typing for hours on both mobile devices and the computers, it is causing splitting, fracturing and fraying on the edges of nails. Experts say that it would be wise to trim the nails if you type a lot or use the pads of the fingers to type.

3 Less hand lotion application

The truth is that even your hands need to be kept moist in order to keep them healthy. Bu water dries out your skin every time you wash your hands and that is why you need to apply lotion on your hands. If the hands are dry, it means that your nail cuticles and underlying nail matrix are also extremely dry and will be more susceptible to breaking and splitting. So buy a good quality hand lotion and keep applying it regularly, especially around the area of the nails and cuticles.

4 Leaving polish for too long

All the nail polishes contain spirit or alcohol in them to keep them liquid. This means that if you leave your nail polish on the nails for a long period of time, the polish will dry out the nails and cuticles, weakening them considerably. Even the polishes that advertise to be free of solvent toluene and the plasticizer dibutyl phthalate can dry out the skin near the nails.

5 Cannot leave cuticles alone

Cuticles are pieces of skin that are present in between the skin and the nails and protect anything outside from getting under the nail matrix. Things like bacteria, water and anything gross can lead to infection settling in and you using the cuticle cutter too much, you remove the protective layering of the nails. This can invite infections and other hazards to your nails. Never cut your cuticles ever.
