Not many stowaways have survived such a feat

A Boeing 747 flies at 550 mph at the height of slightly over 35,000 feet. At 35,000ft, the average temperature is roughly -54C, with around 25% less oxygen in the air than at sea level, making it extremely difficult for a stowaway to survive. Hypoxia, frostbite, hypothermia, and many other ailments can come from this.

In addition to the risk of being crushed by the landing gear as it retracts after takeoff, those attempting to hold onto the undercarriages of aircraft are at the risk of plummeting to their deaths if the landing gear is deployed.

How the man managed to stowaway is still not known

It’s isn’t known if the man entered the landing gear in Kenya or South Africa. According to FlightAware’s statistics, the plane remained above 30,000 feet for the whole of the journey. Joanna Helmonds, a spokesperson for the Dutch Royal Marechaussee, a national police force, said- “This is definitely very unusual that someone was able to survive the cold at such a height – very, very unusual.”
